Apple just announced their VR headset lately and it sounds like something that’s going to end up being really expensive.
I’ve been trying to think about usecase where I would see myself using the device regularly. I am in a household of 5 for example. Is the idea that all of us have a device each or is it a shareable device.
Today we have the oculus and it’s something that we take turns using. The software model is also quite weird the last time I checked. If I have understood it correctly, there is no way to share games in the family for example. Even if it’s us taking turns playing a game, if I have a separate account on a separate device, I would have to repurchase games if I want to play them as me.
Needless to say, I’m not really up to date with what apps are available on VR so it’s no wonder that I have a hard time imagining what I would be even doing with one. Most of the people I’ve talked to have said they see it more as a productivity tool, basically being able to have a bigger workspace in VR instead of having a physical one. I would say that’s the best usecase I have heard so far, except I still don’t think I would be able to stand 8 hours with something, no matter how light, strapped on my face. I already have issues with the glasses nose bumper thing sitting on my nose throughout the day. I really can’t imagine having half of my face encased like that for more than an hour.
What I do want to see in my lifetime is a device that can just read my mind so i can use it for writing stuff down. I saw a video about a twitch streamer that was playing games using just her mind so there is research going on in this department. She has been able to just think about the moves on the controller and it gets translated as input to the game. It’s pretty amazing if you ask me and that tech, I can think of many usecases for.
Too many times I’ve laid awake because I think about things I need to remember the following day or may figure out a problem I’m trying to solve. All of these times, I’ve struggled on whether I should get up and actually write stuff down. Most of the time, I just stay awake longer trying to just remember it, only for me to forget pretty much everything the next day. Wouldn’t it be nice if we can have a non obtrusive headset that could just translate our thoughts even just to writing.
I would go for much more walks if that meant I could just think about stuff and start writing it down. I would be even happy to do chores around the house with it.
I think the fact that VR just blocks our vision basically rendering us immobile and or vulnerable, doesn’t sit well with me. Not something I would use a lot at least. But I really hope the brain reading tech develops so that I can use it within my lifetime.
