The influence

I was highly likely scrolling through tiktok as I usually am and somehow managed to land on writer tiktor. There I saw a few creators posting about this device that they use for **distraction free writing**. I have an unfulfilled dream of being a writer. Today I write code for a living, but at various points in my life, I have ventured into writing. When I was in elementry, my friend and I used to “publish” our short stories when we discovered Corel’s publishing software. I can’t remember what it was called. When I was in college, I had many personal blogs, switching as more people I knew found out about it. I liked writing for people who didn’t know me. I felt self conscious when people I know started commenting on my blogs. So I usually switched around. Anyway, you see how easily I get distracted with my writing. You can only imagine how I am when I’m on a computer. Even at work, I need the microsoft todo app to actually be always on top with the top 3 things I need to get done today otherwise, I get infinitely derailed. Me being easily distracted plus me being easily influenced when it comes to tech purchases resulted in me buying the Freewrite Traveler. To be fair, I actually did think quite a bit before hitting buy. To be honest, that happened only because the shipping was going to take 21 *business days*. There were several instances where I added it to cart only to abandon it. Usually, when I postpone my purchase by a few days, the urge passes and I move on to the next thing advertised. This one didn’t pass so quickly. I have for a while now been trying to find a solution to my writer’s itch. I have a galaxy fold that I bring with me when we go travelling, along with a Microsoft foldable keyboard. It works alright, but having to charge it every day even though it wasn’t my main phone, was a bit of a hassle. Also, finding a way to prop it up while writing was also not the most comfortable. I always had to be at a table to be able to write (because of the folding keyboard). Eventually I bit the bullet and bought it. It took ages to arrive as it was shipping from the U.S.

The first week

It’s been barely a week since I got it. 5 days to be exact. The freewrite devices sync to the postbox platform and there you can see all your drafts, change device settings and sync options. My stats so far are 5 drafting days with a 5 day streak at 6,400 words. Not all words are mine because my kids have also been trying it out. Especially my 7 year old, she likes the ‘vintage’ feel of it. I’ve yet to figure out how exactly I’m going to be using this but so far, I’ve been quite religious at journalling every chance i get. I got it on a work day so this is the first weekend with it. Let’s see what my stats get up to at the end of this week. I still sit mostly at a table to type comfortably but there have been some moments on the beanbag, or sitting up in my daughter’s bunk bed waiting for her to fall asleep. Just this morning, I was writing in bed since I received my book lamp yesterday. The freewrite traveler doesn’t have backlighting but that’s an ok tradeoff for the battery life though. I have yet to test it exhaustively but apparently it lasts 4 weeks but i’m guessing that’s with the wifi off. We’ll see if those stats hold up with my usage. I have the wifi on though. So far I’m really liking it. Much more than I thought I would. I have bought quite a number of gadgets recently but I’m feeling I’m going to get a lot more return on investment on this one. Already, I feel more creative. In a sense that I’m writing more than just sitting watching tiktoks. I like that I’m spending more time writing out my thoughts. I still wish there was a way to just think and write things. But maybe if that was possible, there would be even more junk content online. With all this new development with AI for creating content, let alone text content, it’s quite hard to find quality stuff now.
