Kids in Kahoots – Making learning fun for preschoolers at home

I found out about http://www.kahoot.com through the SFI course I am taking right now. It’s a really fun way to get a group engageged be it at work or at school. I also found that It can be a great platform for learning activities for my kids at home.

It’s basically a quiz platform that allows you to create and share your own quizzes as well. Once you select or setup your quiz, you can start it and give the game pin to your students or coworkers so they can participate via an app or their mobile browsers on their phones. UPDATE: okay they have other formats available as well. Apart from quizzes, you can run surveys, facilitate discussions and a new jumble game – all of which I have yet to try but maybe they will make for intertesting formats for kids as well.

There are already lots of Kahoots available but as far as I’ve seen, most of them have been tailored to the demographic that can already read. So I created a few of my own simple ones targetted at my own kids. They’re 4 and 5 (and one still 1 year old but she loves dancing along to the theme song) and I wanted them to start practicing simple reading. This was the first game I created and it worked pretty well with the kids. They had lots of fun playing together and learning at the same time.

If you check the screen shot below, the game is very visual and pretty easy for early learners. My daughter still keeps playing the game, even by herself so she can beat her own score.

The second game I’ve now created is on telling time. I have yet to test it on my kids but I’ll update this post once I do. But you get the idea, i think there are a lot of possibilities for using this as a tool for early learners.
